Spotting a player who can redeem a disappointing regular season takes more than a hunch. Playoff pools reward different things than a season-long league, so the way you judge a struggling skater or goaltender should change once the bracket is set.

Start with the series, not the player

In most playoff formats, every game a player appears in is another chance to score. A modest producer on a team that plays four rounds will usually outscore a star whose club exits early. Before picking any bounce-back option, decide which teams you expect to go deep, then look for undervalued players on those rosters. A forward who slumped through the winter but skates on a likely contender carries far more upside than a hot name on a long-shot.

Separate bad luck from bad play

Some down years are driven by factors that tend to even out. Look for signs such as:

• Low shooting percentage compared with the player's career norms, while shot volume stays steady.
• Healthy ice time, especially on the power play, which suggests the coaching staff still trusts him.
• Returning from injury late in the season, which can hide what a fully fit player offers.
• Linemate changes, where a reshuffled top six may finally give him a productive partner.

By contrast, a player losing minutes, dropping down the depth chart or being taken off special teams is often struggling for reasons that a new month will not fix.

Matchups and roles matter

Playoff hockey tightens up. Checking lines get matched against top units, and penalties can become rarer as games grow more physical. Defensemen who quarterback the power play and forwards who win faceoffs or block shots may hold value in pools that count more than goals and assists, so read your scoring rules closely before drafting.

Balance risk across your roster

A smart pool lineup mixes reliable producers with one or two calculated gambles. Leaning entirely on redemption stories leaves you exposed if a favoured team stumbles in round one.
