Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and the Fantasy Playoff Mindset

Bone Thugs-n-Harmony came out of Cleveland, Ohio, in the early 1990s and were signed by Eazy-E to Ruthless Records. Their 1994 EP Creepin on ah Come Up introduced the rapid-fire, melodic delivery that became their trademark. The 1995 album E. 1999 Eternal and the single "Tha Crossroads" made them one of the best-known groups in hip-hop. What set them apart was how the members worked together. Krayzie, Layzie, Bizzy, Wish and Flesh-n-Bone traded verses and harmonies so tightly that the group sounded like one instrument. No single rapper carried the record.

That same idea is useful when you draft a playoff pool, which is where the second half of this page was heading. In a regular-season fantasy league you can win by stacking individual stars and riding their volume over six months. A post-season pool rewards something different: games played. A good player on a team that loses in the first round gives you four or five games. A solid secondary scorer on a team that reaches the final can give you twenty or more.

Practical rules for playoff pools

  • Pick teams before players. Decide which clubs you expect to go deep, then fill your roster mostly from them. Correlation is a feature here, not a risk.
  • Value depth on contenders. Second-line forwards and power-play defencemen on strong teams often outscore stars on weaker clubs over a full run.
  • Watch goaltending. A hot goalie can carry an underdog, and wins plus shutouts pile up quickly in long series.
  • Look for bounce-back candidates. Players coming off a down regular season can still have big springs if their team has a favourable bracket. Base the call on role and ice time, not last year's totals.
  • Check health and lineup news right up to your league's deadline. One late scratch can sink a pick.

Like a harmony group, a playoff roster works best when the parts fit together. For matchup-by-matchup numbers, see our projections. Our rankings list players by expected games played as well as points per game.
